Locs: Maintenance and Progress Update

I love my hair.  Sometimes I look at pics of me with my ‘fro and I miss my old hair a lot.  But then, I look in the mirror and I’m suddenly happy again.  I have not one once of regret! The years of trying to make relaxed hair work for me, the years of detangling my natural hair, the years of loc twisting–all worth it. I don’t wish I had a different texture and I’m a little sad that I let “hair typing” consume me.  That 4a nonsense really didn’t help with anything.

I can’t believe my hair is this long! This is a picture of me getting my hair re-twisted by my loctician Amira. She’s the only person I’ve let twist my hair because she believes in healthy hair and quick service. Plus, she’s a Sex and The City stan like me, so the minutes zoom by. I’ll debut the style she gave me in a new video. I’ve been receiving compliments everywhere I go! : )

Fly and Natural

I’m on a 30 day mission to keep my hair twisted. I want low manipulation for growth, strength and low key maintenance. It’s really going well! I’m on day 18 of the challenge, and it’s going great! I have been doing twist outs on my twists, to give them a curly/wavy effect. I’ll be posting tutorials and documenting my process at Naturally Scandalous, my Natural Hair Blog. To see how I created this style, check me out over there! If you want to learn how to wash, moisturize and take care of natural hair, check me out on my Natural Hair Youtube Channel, NaturallyScandalous.

CB2, You’re Giving Me Natural Hair Inspiration

Dear CB2,

I’ve been an avid fan of your products since I stumbled upon your shop in NYC.  You’re products are all over my vision board.  In fact, I’ll be picking up some products at your new Georgetown location in a few weeks.  So, I tra-la-la’ed onto your website the other day and saw the perfection that is pictured above.  The Summer color scheme. The roof-top city image. The absolutely gorgeous brown girl with the sexy ‘fro! CB2, thank you!

Fan for life,

Erin

Loc Update: My Two Year Loc Anniversary!

This morning I showered, washed my locs, threw a little oil in my hair and threw it up in a pony. I had my hair in a braid out for the last 3+ weeks, so it was time for a hair cleanse. I’ve never had a ponytail this long, ever.  Locs have totally changed my life! My two year loc anniversary is in just a few short days, and I’ve never been happier! Wooo hooo! Check out my loc album with 2+ years of progress here!

The Hottest Hair at New York Fashion Week: Can My Locs Do This?

I have seen the hottest hair styles this Fashion Week.  Usually, these styles are created on people with fine blonde hair. Either way, I’m wondering if I can put a spin on these and wear them with my locs.

I am waiting for the day that my hair is long enough to fit in a bun.  I LOVE a bun. Here’s the look at the Alice + Olivia presentation yesterday at The Plaza.

How hot is this? This is the look at threeASFOUR by Sebastian Professional Lead Stylist Design Team Member Thomas Dunkin.

Soft Hollywood waves at Tracy Reese. How the heck do I do this?

Loc Rave: I love my Loctician! + Coupon

After I decided to boogie board in Virginia Beach last weekend, my hair needed some serious help. Who else would I call other than my loctician, Amira! I’ve been going to her from Day 1, and I’ve never let another person maintain my hair. She’s got 11 years experience, and all of her clients have been going to her for years as well.

In Baltimore, there are VERY few stylists that promote healthy hair, and this is why Amira is so successful. She uses all natural products, which is a major plus for me. Her technique is amazing, so my maintenance stays fresh for weeks and in all types of weather. I knew that she was great when she told me that well over 50% of her clientele come from PG County, DC, Philly, NYC and surrounding states. All I can do is rave over her, and I’m SO happy that she’s taking care of my hair!

Lucky for us, Amira is working full time as a loctician, so you don’t have to wait until Saturday (if you want.) Her services start at $55.  Many of her clients go to her once a month (or less frequently than that.) For more information on Amira, check out her website at http://www.mantralocs.com, or email her at Amira@mantralocs.com.  To receive $10 off of your first appointment, tell her I sent you!

Wearing Weaves For Hair Growth

It seems like every other woman (of any race) is walking out of their home with a weave in.  This could be a full weave, half, or a few pieces here and there.  Many women wear them for style reasons, they like to have a different look often or don’t want to damage their real hair.  And there is a slight few who wear weaves for the single purpose of growing out their hair. The idea is to let the hair rest and grow with the lowest amount of manipulation.  It’s insane how daily combing, finger playing, and product over-usage can retard the process. Overall, I think this is an excellent strategy.

For instance, check out one of the best weave stylists that I’ve ever seen, Reniece.  She’s a Maryland based stylist that has people buzzing. This woman is so in demand that she rarely takes new clients.  I met her a few years ago, as I was a candidate for a Healthy Hair Makeover.  My hair was natural, dry, full of color and driving me crazy. Because the excessive hair coloring, it was best that I not weave my hair, for fear that I’d have too much breakage. I was very disappointed, but very happy that she didn’t withhold her opinion just to make some extra money.

While researching this idea, I was dumbfounded at the results of her clients! They come in every so often for maintenance and analysis of how the progression is coming along.  Here’s a before and after page, including clients that have used Reniece’s (and her sister Breon, also a master weaver) talents to get their hair to grow. The video below is the end result of the stylist’s own progress. GORGEOUS hair. And the kicker is…she’s 100% natural. I had NO idea. You can see her progress here in her photo album. If you have any questions about weaves, brands and products to try, etc., Reniece has a detailed FAQ section that is sure to help you out!

Did wearing a weave help your hair grow??
