I have to disagree with you about not being able to accomplish this look for whatever reason, maybe beceause the 1st time was a fail but I have confidence you can achieve it. Now, I was on "the tube" (youtube) the other night checking out colouredbeautiful who recreated the look and she did an AMAZING job, I mean really! She's in the dark hue of us brown skin sisters, not light as Rihanna so I don't think complexion has anything to do with it, NOT that you said it did.
