One of my holy grail makeup guides was this gem by photographer and makeup artist Francois Nars. Yep, the man that created my beloved Taj Mahal and Exhibit A blushes for Naomi Campbell is a jack of all trades. How did I not include this last month in the best makeup books post?
I love this book for quite a few reasons. It really does teach you about the art of makeup. Read on to see why.
Make Up Your Mind is definitely a great makeup read! It’s really interesting to see these models, sans makeup products. We get to see the ungroomed brows, skin discoloration, and all the other joys of being a human being. The book is broken down in chapters, including eyes, shimmer, pastels, color and skin. Each chapter gets a breakdown of tips and tricks, and every look has a step-by-step written tutorial.
Here’s the most intriguing part of the book. On the left side is the untouched photo. On the right, you’ll see the model in full makeup by Francois Nars. In the middle, there’s an overlay that tells which products were placed where on the face. Some of the eye makeup is a little dated, and probably not all that enticing since we see women sporting 5 eye shadows a day on Youtube. But, the makeup is absolute perfection, and much of the makeup isn’t detectable. It’s editorial perfection. You can pick up a copy of NARS Makeup Your Mind here at Amazon. There’s a part 2 available as well, Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself! Here’s a sneak peek inside the book.
